Since 1981, the German Federal Foreign Office has been supporting the preservation of cultural heritage in Nepal. Especially after the devasting earthquakes in April and May 2015 Germany got involved in the reconstruction of destroyed cultural heritage.

In 2016 the restoration of the Patan Kingspalace (UNESCO World Heritage) was supported. The German Embassy was subsidizing the rebuilding of two cultural seating areas, so-called Mani Mandapas, and the reconstruction of the Sundari Chowk Palace.

This year, the German Federal Foreign Office is mainly sponsoring the rebuilding of the Hindu Laxmi Narayan Tempel in Changu Narayan Mandir, also UNESCO World Heritage, north of Bhaktapur.

The constant German funding enables the maintenance and preservation of cultural heritage and is therefore strengthening the cultural identity of Nepal.
