From 22nd to 26th of March 2016 a delegation of the Committee on Economic Cooperation and Development led by the chairperson of the committee, Mrs. Dagmar Wöhrl (CSU), visited Nepal.
The current humanitarian and economic situation and the state of reconstruction almost one year after the devastating earthquakes of April / May 2015 was the main focus of the visit. In addition, the Parliamentarians were interested in learning about how Nepal is dealing with human rights violations committed during the decade-long civil war.
In addition to meetings with parliamentarians, the National Reconstruction Authority, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and the Commission of Investigation on Enforced Disappearances Enforced Disappearances and various partners of civil society, the delegation met with the new President of Nepal, Bhidya Devi Bhandari. Project visits focusing on recovery and rehabilitation efforts of bilateral German development cooperation in Bhaktapur and Nuwakot district completed the programme of the delegation.
The diversity of interlocutors and meetings allowed the delegation to gain a differentiated and comprehensive picture of the challenges Nepal is currently facing. The delegation encouraged the Government of Nepal to swiftly implement the $ 4.4 billion international support for the reconstruction of the earthquake-hit districts pledged at the International Donors' Conference in June 2015. The parliamentarians also emphasized that Nepal should make greater efforts to ensure that the reconciliation process pays justice to the victims of the civil war.Delegation with President Bidhya Devi Bandari (© Ministry of Foreign Affairs Nepal)
